We are delighted to share the fantastic news that Gordon Wessels, a proud member of Waterkloof Golf Club, has emerged as the 2025 Cape Winelands Senior Amateur Champion! The tournament, which was hosted by De Zalze Golf Club, saw Gordon lead from start to finish, showcasing his exceptional skill and composure throughout the event.
Gordon kicked off the championship with a steady 71 in the opening round, but it was his brilliant second-round performance of 69 (-3) that truly set him apart. With a final score of -4, Gordon clinched victory by a solid three strokes, securing his place as the Senior Amateur Champion for 2025.
We’re thrilled to see Gordon's hard work and dedication pay off on such a prestigious stage. His victory was a testament to his consistency, especially in the second round, where his -3 was the best score of the tournament.
The only other player to finish under par was Ulrich Schulte from Bochumer GC in Germany, who finished second at -1 after shooting rounds of 74 and 69.
In addition to Gordon's outstanding achievement, we also want to acknowledge the strong performances from other players, including Riaan Lewis from King David Mowbray GC, who finished in third place with scores of 72 and 73 (+1). Fourth and fifth places were decided by a count-out between Sean Fenger (Durban CC) and Craig Poulton (King David Mowbray GC), both finishing on +3.
In the Nett division, Iain Brodie from De Zalze GC won with a total of 140, followed closely by Peter van Coller, also from De Zalze, with a score of 141. Richard Brooker from Royal Cape GC was crowned Super-Senior Winner with a score of +4, edging out Dirk Van Der Merwe from Bellville GC.
A huge thank you to De Zalze Golf Club for hosting the tournament and to Waterford Estate for sponsoring their award-winning wines. We’re incredibly proud of Gordon and all the competitors, and we look forward to celebrating his success as a member of Waterkloof Golf Club. Well done, Gordon!
